Sri Lanka to expand Colombo’s East Container Terminal

The intention is for SLPA to construct a 400 m berth in ECT parallel to the construction of the South Container Terminal.

Sri Lanka’s cabinet of ministers has given approval to the project proposed by President Mahinda Rajapaksa in his capacity as Minister of Ports and Highways.

SLPA has a long term strategic plan to complete construction of both Colombo East and West container terminals by 2020 which when completed will increase total annual teu capacity to around 10m teu.

According to SLPA, the terminals will be developed as state-of-the art facilities equipped with the latest technology including computerised terminal management systems (TOS) in order to increase throughput, vessel turnaround, productivity and revenues of Colombo Port.
