The GAX service turns in five weeks with five US flag ships of 3,237 teu, allowing Hapag-Lloyd to carry US government and military cargo as part of the US Military Security Program. Hapag-Lloyd inherited this US flag service from CP Ships when the latter was acquired in 2005 by TUI AG, the parent of Hapag- Lloyd at that time.
CP Ships in turn inherited the GAX service when it bought the US-based Lykes Lines in 1997.
The port move also involves NYK, OOCL and ACL, each of which take slots on the Hapag-Lloyds ships. The GAX service will now call at Antwerp, Thamesport, Bremerhaven, Charleston, Port Everglades, Houston, Savannah and Norfolk.
