Six new working rail tracks totalling 18,000 linear feet (5,500 m) will service up to two 9,000 (2,750 m ) trains simultaneously.
The FEC also plans to relocate its existing domestic intermodal service from Andrews Avenue in Fort Lauderdale to the new ICTF.
When completed in mid 2014, the ICTF is expected to reduce congestion on interstate highways and local roadways and reduce harmful air emissions by diverting an estimated 180,000 trucks from the roads by the year 2029.
Port Everglades contributed the land for the ICTF which is valued at US$19m. Estimated construction costs of US$53m will be paid through US$18m in grants from Florida Department of Transportation’s Strategic Intermodal System programme, a US$30m State Infrastructure Bank loan, and US$5m from FEC’s capital plan.
