Truck drivers whose visit has been electronically pre-notified by their companies can remain in their cabins when entering and leaving the terminal. At the terminal, which is operated by Europe Container Terminals, the unloading and loading that takes place is almost fully automated. Only for the last few metres between container and the vehicle chassis does a human briefly take over control of the automatic stacking crane from his remote position in a nearby building.
“The one millionth truck is a milestone to be proud of and confirms the importance of this sector for us,” said Europe Container Terminals’ president Jan Westerhoud. “We are continuing our investments in innovations towards an even more efficient logistics process.”
In addition to road transport, about half of all the containers at the Euromax Terminal Rotterdam bound for the hinterland and vice versa are moved by rail and inland shipping.
