It was three years ago that America-based Maher Terminals announced that it would take an unspecified stake in the terminal and logistics park. Strategically located on the Strait of Canso, Nova Scotia, the terminal will have an initial capacity in excess of 1.5m teu and will be the closest east coast port to Europe and Asia via the Suez Canal.
With no air or water draught restrictions, ice-free and a navigational channel depth exceeding 27 m (90 feet), with 18 m (60 feet) alongside, the terminal will be one of the few North American East Coast ports capable of handling the world’s largest containerships.
The terminal is specifically designed as a high volume intermodal container transfer facility, with on-dock access to the CN rail network. Containers will be moved between vessel and rail to provide shippers rapid transit times between Asia and the North American markets of Canada and the US. It is hoped that construction will start before the end of the year.
