The total value of the project is €56.3m (US$77m), with the funding covering 20% of the costs; the Port of Helsinki will receive 76% of the funding, while the Port of Tallinn will receive the remaining 24%.
The Twin-Port project is part of the TEN-T (Trans-European Network) MoS (Motorways of the Seas) Multi-Annual 2012-2015 programme. The European Commission support will go towards the development of the harbours in both cities, which are part of the core network of European harbours.
This spring, the City of Helsinki submitted a joint application, on behalf of both ports to improve traffic in their respective harbours; in Helsinki, the programme focuses in particular on improving the capacity and traffic arrangements of the West Harbour, while in Tallinn the focus is on similar efforts at the Old City Harbour.
