Japan’s Foreign Affairs and External Trade minister, Connelly Sandakabatu, said that the project is strategically important as the port is the islands’ sea-gateway to the world, which could become one of the hubs in the region. He added: “This project will allow for better and efficient engagement on maritime transport and enhance greater connectivity for both regional and international trading, boosting the Solomon Islands economy.”
Three main components make up the detailed design phase, including creating a 15 m draught wharf to remove the congestion of calling ships and significantly reduce a berth waiting time of ships to almost zero. The second is the expansion of the container yard, increasing the stacking capacity by 50% to enable increased container throughput. Linked to the development will ancillary work to improve water supply and lighting facilities.
