The Port of Felixstowe has received consent from the UK Marine Management Organisation (MMO) for the extension of its newest container handling facility, Berths 8 & 9.
Commenting on the latest development, Clemence Cheng, chief executive officer of Hutchison Ports UK (HPUK), said: “We welcome the MMO’s decision to consent to the extension of Berths 8 & 9 by 190 metres. This scheme represents the latest in a long line of investments by HPUK at the Port of Felixstowe”.
Opened in November 2011, Berths 8 & 9 were designed with a depth of up to 18 m alongside and cranes able to span 25 containers across a vessel. The new extension will allow more berth-windows and greater flexibility to accommodate ultra-large container ships. Currently, Felixstowe is the only UK port to have handled the 18,000 teu class vessels serving the Asia – Europe trade.
