The US Army Corps of Engineers has given the geo ahead for Houston Port Authority’s (HPA) Bayport and Barbours Cut channel improvement projects and the federal assumption of channels’ maintenance when construction is completed.
The improvement projects at HPA’s two container terminals will deepen the channels from 40 to 45 feet (12.2 to 13.7 m), matching the depth of the Houston Ship Channel (HSC) so that the container terminals can realise the benefits of the HSC widening and deepening project completed in 2005.
The project will also widen or realign the channels by up to 100 feet (30.5 m) to better accommodate larger ships.
