Medcenter Container Terminal (MCT), part of the Contship Italia Group, in Gioia Tauro, Italy, has ordered ten electric straddle carriers from Kalmar. The order was booked into the manufacturer’s second quarter order intake with deliveries scheduled for November 2014.
The machines to be delivered comply with the latest exhaust emission regulations whilst also improving fuel efficiency by up to 20% over previous models and reducing running costs overall. The 3-high straddle carriers have the capacity of 40 tonnes.
Domenico Bagalá, Managing Director at MCT, said: “Owning and operating costs are now a critical factor in the selection process, given the challenges represented by the current unstable economic environment. In this respect, these latest electric machines clearly make a significant contribution to lowering fuel costs and boosting productivity.”
Currently handling an annual 3m teu, the transshipment hub continues to grow and is now considered to be the “Mega Hub “in the South Europe region, with both global reach to all major markets and regional connections on a weekly basis with over 60 ports throughout the Mediterranean, Tyrrhenian, Aegean and Black Sea.
