Researchers at classification society DNV GL have developed a new battery-operated shipping vessel that may offer an optimal safe green solution to the growing need for transport capacity.
The ship, which is still being tested, runs on a 3000 kWh battery instead of diesel fuel, reducing operating costs by minimizing the number of high maintenance parts such as rotational components.
The vessel has a range of 100 nautical miles before battery charging is required and therefore, carbon dioxide can be eliminated if the energy for charging comes via renewable sources.
