The state of Hawaii is planning to build a new US$266m container terminal at the Port of Honolulu.
The New Kapalama Container Terminal, scheduled to be completed by 2016, will cover 94 acres, have two berths for container vessels and boost Honolulu’s current capacity by one-third.
Officials have been discussing the potential for a new container facility for 25 years, with plans on-going for a decade; however, the recession and the related drop in throughput made expansion seem less urgent.
