According to reports from Reuters, Maersk Line has told analysts at its Copenhagen headquarters today (Wednesday 24th) that it intends to spend around US$3bn a year between next year (2015) and 2019 on new vessels to reinforce its position as the world’s largest container shipping company.
The company said that its current orderbook “is not sufficient to grow with the market,” adding that the vessels will “support a low cost position by being the largest possible in each trade”.
The announcement comes shortly after Alphaliner reported that it was possible that Maersk’s ‘2M’ partner, Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), could eclipse the Danish shipping line as the world’s largest shipping line by 2016.
