China has approved expansion plans at the Port of Tianjin, already one of the world’s biggest container ports as ranked by throughput.
The State Council accepted proposals which will see the port enlarge the acreage of operational waters from 1120 sq. km to 1,590 sq. km, extend its waterfront length for docks from 79 km to 148 km, and increase the number of berths from 75 to 146.
Gao Yuqing, deputy director of port management at the Tianjin Municipal People’s Government, told China Daily: “The project will help Tianjin port transform and upgrade with infrastructure construction. The building of new ports will help boost the regional integration of Beijing, Tianjin and Hebei province, and further drive the economic growth of surrounding regions such as Shandong and Henan provinces.”
