The first piles have been driven for the new quay at the United Waalhaven Terminal (UWT) container centre in the Johan Frisohaven in the Port of Rotterdam.
The quay, which will replace a similar facility in Eemhaven, will have a length of 165 m and an initial draught of 7 m, to be deepened eventually to around 10 metres. The construction work was commissioned by the Port Authority and is expected to be completed at the end of September.
The main purpose of the new quay is for handling empty containers, although it will also be suitable for full containers. This means that UWT can accommodate the increasing modal shift from truck to inland shipping, which is expected to result in around 40% of all empty movements being handled via inland shipping.
