APM Terminals Mumbai, operating at Jawaharlal Nehru Port (JNP), India’s largest container port, has established a new record for Indian ports by handling a total of 2.01m teu during the Fiscal Year of 2014-15.
Growth has been achieved since larger vessels of 9,000 teu capacity started calling at the facility in 2013, aided by the deepening of the harbour channel in 2014, combined with an increase in container volumes.
The increase, however, is straining the existing Indian port infrastructure, which must also deal with regulatory issues that have held back further infrastructure investment.
