Port Corpus Christi has opened Phase I of the Nueces River Rail Yard, with a new main interchange at the west end of the Inner Harbour to meet the rapidly increasing demands for rail traffic experienced over recent years.
The new facility, which will greatly improve efficiency of existing cargo movement at the port’s multimodal facilities, includes a 3000 m (9,920 ft) long unit train siding capable of storing a full 160 unit train. It initially consists of four parallel ladder tracks for a total yard capacity of 253 rail wagons.
Costing US$17.8m to construct, with US$10m coming from the federal TIGER grant, the remaining funds were covered by Union Pacific, Kansas City Southern, Burlington Northern Santa Fe, Genesse and Wyoming, as well as and Port Corpus Christi.
