A meeting of the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) of the International Maritime Organisation has decided not to accept a proposal to limit shipping’s carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions.
The proposal was made by the Marshall Islands, one of the countries most threatened by climate change. Its foreign minister Tony de Brum said: “We present our proposal so that global shipping can be a climate leader.”
The debate lasted only 90 minutes, Panama rejected the proposal and the MEPC refused to adopt it, opting instead to say that the plan “could be addressed at a future session, recognising the need to move cautiously forward on proposal”.
