Throughput at Hong Kong, the world’s third biggest port, has declined year-on-year for the tenth straight month.
April’s throughput was down 11.7% year-on-year, which puts the port’s throughput so far this year 9% down on the equivalent period of 2014.
Observers have speculated that the port is losing export cargo to Shenzhen, which is nearer to the majority of the Pearl River Delta’s factories. Transhipment now accounts for more than 70% of Hong Kong’s throughput.
