The former chairman of the Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) has denied allegations that corruption and malpractice have been common at the organisation.
These allegations have been made by the country’s ports minister, its port workers union and anonymous sources cited by national newspaper The Sunday Leader.
The Sunday Leader has claimed that, according to reports, the SLPA has incurred heavy losses by paying rebates as compensation to maritime agencies at the end of each year. It is alleged that these rebates have been paid even when the agencies have not honoured the terms of their Terminal Service Agreements with the SLPA.
