Human Rights Watch’s China expert has told CM she is concerned that 12 people charged with dereliction of duty over the Tianjin port explosions will not receive a fair trial.
Sophie Richardson said that when similar industrial accidents or scandals have taken place, the Chinese government has made scapegoats of people without giving them access to a fair trial.
“Trials like this one are less about evaluating conduct in accordance with statute than about political outcomes. If [former Tianjin Port Group president Zheng Qinyue] is the scapegoat, there will not be a fair trial,” she said.
