An industry coalition has announced the release of a new Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) document to dispel the confusion arising from the new container weighing regulations set to take effect on July 1, 2016.
The document is an attempt to shed some light on the amendments to the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) Convention adopted by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) which require packed shipping containers to have a verified gross mass (VGM) before being loaded on a ship for export.
The coalition, which includes the World Shipping Council (WSC), TT Club, International Cargo Handling Coordination Association (ICHCA) and Global Shippers’ Forum (GSF), developed the FAQs in response to numerous questions from industry players on the steps to take for the successful implementation of the new regulations.
