DP World and the Prince Rupert Port Authority have agreed to study further expansion of the Fairview Container Terminal.
The operator will study current marine liner services and container volume growth forecasts for Trans-Pacific trade on the West Coast, to see if there is demand for phase two south expansion.
Construction is currently underway on phase two north expansion, which will take their terminal’s capacity to 1.3m teu.
Government approval has been received for the phase two south expansion which could be delivered within three to five years, according to DP World. This would increase Fairview’s capacity to more than 2m teu.
Prince Rupert is situated 800km north of Vancouver and has a direct rail service to Chicago, Memphis and New Orleans.
