The majority of the new vessels over 4,000 teu built in 2015 were sent to operate in the East-West trades, according to Drewry.
The average size of ship at work in Asia-North Europe increased by 16% to 14,100 teu since the start of 2015,
However, 18,000 teu vessels have been introduced recently to the Asia-West Coast North America (WCNA) route and the Asia-East Coast South America (ECSA) trade saw a disproportionately high intake of newbuilds.
