Six convoys of self-driving semi-automated trucks have arrived at APM Terminals (APMT)’s Maasvlakte II terminal in Rotterdam from Sweden, Germany and Belgium in the first-ever cross-border experiment of this kind.
More of a dozen ‘smart trucks’ arrived at the port in so-called ‘truck platoons’, convoys of two or three trucks autonomously driving in a column connected via wifi, with the first truck determining the speed and route.
The trip made by the trucks, which were manufactured by DAF Trucks, Daimler Trucks, Iveco, MAN Truck & Bus, Scania and Volvo Group, is part of the European Truck Platooning Challenge organised by the Dutch government.
