DP World Southampton gears up for SOLAS implementation

DP World Southampton (DPWS) has ordered a container weight system (CWS) from measurement systems’ provider Strainstall to prepare for the enforcement of container weighing requirements in July 2016.

With the order, DPWS becomes one of the first operators to launch a container weight verification system to comply with the new Safety of Life at Sea Convention (SOLAS) regulation, which requires a laden export container to be weighed prior to being loaded onto a ship.

The CWS, which was specifically developed to meet the SOLAS amendments to be enforced as of July 1, was trialled at the facilities prior to the order.
