The Port of Halifax, Canada, has recorded the highest growth in container volumes in the first half of the year of all North American ports.
Container throughput at the port, which is located on the East coast of Canada, went up by 20% year-on-year, from 197,000 teu in the first six months of 2015 to 235,000 teu in the same period of 2016.
According to local media, Halifax’s fast growth can be attributed mainly to a low Canadian dollar and the port’s ability to handle the big vessels arriving from Asia via the newly-expanded Panama and Suez canals.
