French shipping company CMA CGM has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with liquefied natural gas (LNG) supplier Engie to promote LNG as marine fuel for future container vessels.
The agreement focuses on the development of a joint technical and economic study on the use of LNG as fuel for container ships and a further study on developing engineering specifications for a bunkering vessel adapted to LNG-powered container ships.
CMA CGM said in a statement that using LNG instead of heavy fuel oil offers many environmental advantages, including the significant reduction of CO2 emissions, nitrogen oxides (NOx) and particulate matters, as well as the elimination of Sulphur Oxide (SOx) emissions.
