Terex Port Solutions (TPS) has announced that the New Zealand-based port operator Ports of Auckland Ltd. (POAL) ordered 27 fully automated straddle carriers as part of its automation initiative.
In addition to delivering the new N SC 644 E (1-over-3) machines, which will work in the port’s container stackyard and serve trucks, by mid-2019, TPS will also upgrade a total of 21 existing manual straddle carriers to allow them to work beside the new units.
POAL, which currently operates a fleet of Terex N SC 634 E (1-over-2) diesel-electric straddle carriers, is carrying out a two-part plan including the automation initiative and achieving higher stacking capability, with plans for a medium-term increase in capacity from the current 900,000 teu to 1.7m teu.
