Philippines-headquartered port operator International Container Terminal Services (ICTSI) has completed the construction of its new terminal in Melbourne, Australia, ahead of schedule.
The Victoria International Container Terminal (VICT), which is located in Webb Dock at the Port of Melbourne, will start operations in January 2017.
VICT, which ICTSI claimed will be the most technologically advanced container terminal in the world, signed a 26-year concession with the Port of Melbourne Corporation (PoMC) to design, build, operate and expand a container terminal at Webb Dock East in 2014.
The new the 35.4 ha terminal already features five neo-Panamax robotic quay cranes, arrived at the port earlier this year, which are expected to work almost fully automated in combination with other automated port equipment.
The new facility is set to be able to handle up to 1.4m teu annually, with the empty container park’s capacity going up to 280,000 teu.
VICT, which is located downstream from the West Gate Bridge, will be able to handle vessels with a capacity of up to 8,000 teu.
