The International Transport Forum (ITF) has warned that improvements to the maritime access to the Port of Gothenburg, Sweden, are necessary to remain competitive with other North European ports.
In a study to assess the impact of mega-ships on the city of Gothenburg, the ITF, which is part of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), argued that with the increasing container ship size and due to constraints to the depth of its port access channel and container berth, Gothenburg will need to enhance maritime access to continue attracting direct calls.
According to the organisation, the depth constraints mean that many vessel types cannot call the port when fully loaded or even half loaded in some cases.
