The European Parliament has voted in support of a draft proposal to incorporate international shipping into the EU Emissions Trading System (EU-ETS) starting from 2023 if an international measure is not introduced by 2021.
The regulation would apply to all ships calling at EU ports, including non-EU flag ones.
The inclusion of shipping in the system was part of draft measures proposed to reduce CO2 emissions, and bring EU climate policy into line with the aims of the Paris agreement, which were approved by 379 votes to 263, with 57 abstentions.
