The European Commission has cleared the acquisition of Hamburg Süd by Maersk Line, subject to the German carrier withdrawing from five consortia on various trade routes.
The particular trades in question are those connecting Northern Europe and Central America/Caribbean, Northern Europe and West Coast South America (WCSA), Northern Europe and the Middle East, the Mediterranean and West Coast South America (WCSA) and the Mediterranean and East Coast South America (ECSA).
In late 2014 and early 2015, Hamburg Süd signed cooperation agreements with CMA CGM and United Arab Shipping Company (UASC) on several of the aforementioned trades. Its vessel sharing agreements (VSAs) with Hapag-Lloyd and MSC will also face termination.
