Two Finnish container terminals Steveco Vuosaari and Steveco Mussalo have become the first in the world to go live with Navis’s N4 terminal operating system (TOS) in a hosted private cloud environment.
Steveco sought a new TOS provider after learning that its legacy provider would no longer develop future versions of the software.
The terminal operator then became the first to approach Navis, looking for a cloud solution.
Tapio Mattila, senior vice president of Steveco, said: “Going into this process, we knew that we wanted to host our new terminal system in the cloud, and thus, needed a partner who could meet our needs both technically and philosophically.”
As part of the implementation, all Navis servers, including N4, XPS, ECN4 and the backend database are hosted in a private cloud data centre managed and maintained by software and services company Tieto.
Guenter Schmidmeir, Navis’s vice president and general manager for Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA), said: “The cloud offers tremendous benefits for hosting a terminal system like N4, including on-demand availability, rapid elasticity of the IT infrastructure, pooling of IT resources, as well as clear flexibility and cost efficiencies.”
Steveco’s Vuosaari (Helsinki) and Mussalo (Kotka) terminals move a combined 750,000 teu annually. Its facility in Kotka is located near the Russian boarder while its terminal in the capital city of Helsinki serves domestic import and exports.
