George Devereese of the Loss Prevention Department at UK P&I Club advises how correct ventilation can help to prevent grains from being damaged during transit as a result of cargo sweat.
Cargo sweat is a term given to the condensation which can occur in cargo when moving from a warm climate to a cooler one or by cargo heating up. If left unattended it can damage goods during transit.
“Ventilation is the easiest remedy. For vessels fitted with natural or mechanical ventilation, the moist air may be continuously removed from the headspace above the cargo to reduce or eliminate condensation occurring on the deckhead,” he said.
