Unit45 has selected Orbcomm to provide its end-to-end telematics solution and cloud platform for remote container monitoring and control.
The telematics solution, includes hardware, connectivity, device management, and its CargoWatch web reporting platform, will be used for Unit45’s container fleet.
Jan Koolen, Unit45’s managing director, said: “It is essential for us to see where our container units are, monitor what is happening with them and remotely control the units, and we need to have all of this information directly on our computer screens.”
The 45 ft containers, which the Dutch manufacturer specialises in, are used during long-haul rail for transporting temperature-controlled cargo, along the New Silk Road linking China and Europe.
Orbcomm’s devices which are dual-mode, automatically switch to satellite when there is no cellular coverage, aiming to allow full uninterrupted visibility of containers when traveling through remote regions of the New Silk Road rail route.
The CargoWatch platform allows the container manufacturer to receive container temperature, diesel volume and machine performance data, as well as alerts and alarms.
The platform also enables Unit45 to remotely control refrigerated units, so adjusting the temperature and starting or stopping the reefer can we done from a distance.
It will also report when preventive maintenance or repair is needed, potentially allowing for a qualified technician or the right parts to be waiting at the earliest checkpoint to minimise downtime.
Unit45’s logistics customers and shipper end users can also see the data on their own computer screens or on Orbcomm’s web platform or mobile phone app.
