Hamburg Süd and its Swedish customer Electrolux collaborated to reduce sulphur dioxide emissions during three Latin American port calls in in March.
The Santa Catarina, which has a capacity of 7,114 teu, used cleaner marine gas oil (MGO) instead of standard heavy fuel oil (HFO) to operate its auxiliary engines and boilers during calls at Manzanillo (Mexico), Callao (Peru), Iquique and Puerto Angamos (Chile).
Both of these must be running in port to supply the ship with electricity and heat.
