CMA CGM has completed its acquisition of container transportation and logistics company Containerships, strengthening its position in intra-European transportation.
The Finnish company complements the Marseilles-based firm as it offers services and logistics solutions through sea, road, rail and barge in Northern Europe and the Mediterranean.
With the addition of Containerships’ 690 employees, the carrier’s intra-European customers will now benefit from the expertise of 2,700 employees located in 130 offices.
Last year, a combined 2.2m teu was transported on the companies’ intra-European lines.
The acquisition strengthens the French firm’s offer through a combination of the geographical areas covered by Containerships and MacAndrews, which the company acquired in 2002.
MacAndrews covers Great Britain, Poland, Sweden, Ireland, the Netherlands, Spain (including the Canary Islands), Portugal and Morocco while Containerships covers the Baltic markets, Russia, Northern Europe, North Africa and Turkey.
The logistics company also helps CMA CGM to pursue its strategy towards the protection of the environment with the addition of four 1,400 teu liquefied natural gas (LNG) fuelled vessels.
Additionally, Containerships has a fleet of LNG-powered trucks which means the carrier will be able to offer LNG throughout the transport cycle.
From 2020 onwards, the carrier will welcome nine 22,000 teu and two 1,400 teu container ships into its service offering.
