Hapag-Lloyd has evacuated the crew of its container vessel the Yantian Express as a fire, which originated from one container and has spread to others, has yet to be extinguished.
The fire broke out on January 3 and the crew were safely transferred, unharmed, to the salvage tug Smit Nicobar on January 5 and 6.
Firefighting efforts have been supported by the salvage tug but the fire has yet to be successfully contained and has significantly increased intensity at times due to bad weather conditions.
Hapag-Lloyd has claimed that, at this time, it is not possible to make a precise estimate of any damage to Yantian Express or its cargo. The shipping line is in close cooperation with all relevant authorities.
The 7,510 teu vessel operates the company’s East Coast Loop 5 (EC5) service and was on its way from Colombo to Halifax via the Suez Canal when the fire broke out.
