CSP Iberian Bilbao Terminal has opened its renewed and expanded railway terminal, marking the completion of a total 28 months of work.
The expansion lengthened all four tracks by 100 m, reaching 550 m, enlarging the storage area from 13,950 to 41,800 sq m, and prepared a stacking area next to the tracks with a daily capacity 3,000 teu.
With the new installations, the capacity of the railway terminal has increased by 180,000 teu – in 2018, CSP Iberian Bilboa operated 2,900 trains in its railway terminal and moved a total of 147,000 teu.
This total amounts to 25% of the total number of containers handled by the terminal and is a very high percentage compared with European terminals average.
By enlarging the railway terminal, the CSP Iberian Bilbao Terminal is able to offer new competitive intermodality advantages to shipping companies and rail operators at the port.
In order to help increase efficiency and safety of the operations at the rail terminal, CSP purchased four new reachstackers and fit two new automatic rubber-mounted gantry (ARMG) cranes with a 45-tonne lifting capacity.
These investments are included in the plan designed for the terminal up to 2036, which amounts to a total of €34m (US$38.13m).
In its current phase, 2016-2019, more than one third of the total investment has already been executed.
