Hyster Europe develops solutions to handle containers in the second rail position

Hyster Europe has developed new solutions to help terminals handle containers on railroad cars in the second rail position with the aim to reduce damage and improve efficiency.

One of the options Hyster Europe has developed is a hinged elevating operator cabin, available on the Hyster RS46 reachstacker, to help operators have direct visibility of the top corner pockets on second rail containers.

This is designed to improve upon limitations which occur through the use of cameras or staff (spotters) to direct the operator, saving time and lowering cost per container moved.

Mark Nailer, industry manager for Hyster Europe, explained: “The cab is raised and lowered smoothly on a hinged arm making it easy for the operator to see over a container, which improves productivity straight away.

“Both doors must be locked and it can be raised while driving, although the speed is automatically reduced to 10 km per hour.”

In order to handle a heavy load at extended load centre, a stabiliser can be deployed at the front of the reachstacker and there is an optional tilt of up to 10 degrees on the cab to help improve visibility and operator comfort when handing high stacks.

Nailer added: “The overall height of the reachstacker when the cab is lowered is the same as the standard model, unlike competitor models that use a mast.

“This helps prevent the rearwards from being affected. Plus, it makes road transport easier and speeds up the commissioning of the truck.”

Levers to manually lower the cabin are installed both on the truck and in the cab itself in case the driver falls ill or the truck breaks down.

Hyster Europe is offering another solution for handling containers on the second rail – a remote control for the boom and spreader to enable the driver to position the container whilst on foot.

It is designed so that the driver gets the container in roughly the right position over the railcar and then, after selecting the remote option to immobilise the vehicle, the driver leaves the reachstacker and uses the remote.

Nailer said: “All relevant operational data can be seen on the remote control unit to position the container quickly and easily and means drivers can work independently without the need for a spotter.”

For standard first rail handling, Hyster Europe offers a number of different reachstacker options including intermodal reachstackers with legs for swap-bodies.
