The Port of Sines has begun its expansion work, which will allow the facility to double containerised cargo capacity, with the consignment of the East Breakwater enlargement.
Representing a total investment of approximately €72m (US$78.5m), the enlargement of the breakwater was consigned to Condural – Engenharia SA.
The breakwater will be enlarged by 750 m in order to reinforce the protection of the east side of the Port of Sines, namely with regard to the next expansion phase of the Sines Container Terminal – Terminal XXI.
Construction is due to be finished during the first quarter of 2023, creating the ideal conditions for the simultaneous reception of four large container vessels with a length overall of 400 m.
Upon completion of this next expansion phase, Terminal XXI will double its installed capacity to 4.1m teu.
In October 2019, an amendment to the concession contract for the expansion of Terminal XXI was signed including a private investment of €661m (US$721.3m) under the responsibility of PSA Sines.
