A 5-15% decline in containerised cargo volume handled by the Port of Oakland is on the cards, heading into the summer as fewer container ships mean less cargo.
Oakland Maritime officials told the Harbour Trucking Association that 20 voyages in May and June have been scrubbed, as the coronavirus pandemic stunts global trade.
Port of Oakland business development manager Andrew Hwang said: “It’s a clouded picture. About 10% of our scheduled vessel arrivals have been cancelled by shipping lines, but we don’t know if that will translate into a similar drop in volume.”
