A report from telecommunications provider Ericsson has claimed that private cellular technology can create cost reductions for port operators and increase worker safety, while optimising shipping operations.
The study analysed five use cases in ports – ship-to-shore (STS) cranes, automated rubber-tyred gantry (ARTG) cranes, automated guided vehicles (AGVs), condition monitoring and drone use – finding that private networks can enhance the benefits they offer.
At present, the majority of ports utilise a combination of Wi-Fi and fibre cables when operating remote-controlled STS cranes and ARTGs, but the lack of reliability for wireless technologies like Wi-Fi can adversely affect productivity .
