The Suez Canal Authority (SCA) has seized the Ever Given and lodged a claim for US$916m from the ship’s Japanese owners to cover losses sustained during the six day blockage of the canal.
Following a ruling in an Egyptian court the vessel was arrested, with the SCA declaring that the ship will be held until compensation is paid, and her 25 crew members will be unable to leave the vessel during this time.
On March 23, the container vessel ran aground while transiting northbound under pilotage through the Suez Canal en route to Rotterdam, with strong winds initially blamed for the grounding.
