The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has received heavy criticism after its 77th Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) meeting failed to make significant progress towards decarbonising the sector, following pressure at COP26.
Delegates chose not to adopt a non-binding resolution that international maritime transport must reach zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions no later than 2050.
The IMO agreed to revise its strategy on the reduction of GHG emissions from ships, but this is only expected to occur in 2023.
