Sceptical that the European Union (EU)’s proposal to expand shore power is the right way to reduce shipping emissions, the nine largest German seaports have invited the shipping industry to seek joint solutions for emissions-free vessels at berths.
While the seaports endorse a European limit for carbon emissions for all seagoing and inland waterway vessels at berth, the German ports are concerned that across-the-board implementation of on-grid shoreside power facilities is the not the way to reach that goal.
Quoted in the position paper signed by all nine ports, ZeroEmission@Berth, the port management companies stated: “If they operate with 100% renewable power, on-grid land-based power supply facilities can be an effective measure to reduce emissions from seagoing and inland waterway vessels docked in port, but not for every port, not for every berth and not for every ship.”
