The Port of Barcelona registered a record container traffic of 3.5m teu in 2021, up 19% compared to the previous year and helping to boost overall revenue.
Closing with a turnover of €151m (US$171m), an increase of 9% year-on-year, President of the Port of Barcelona Damià Calvet noted that the upturn in traffic outpaces the jump in turnover because the latter includes the port’s economic aid package.
The Recovery Plan, which was launched in 2021 to promote economic recovery and mitigate the effects of the pandemic and remains in force this year, resulted in the Port of Barcelona operators saving nearly €11m (US$12m) which the port authority has ceased to collect.
