Roll-on roll-off (ro-ro) operator P&O Ferries sacked 800 employees and halted services for the next few days, claiming its current business model is no longer viable.
Crew have refused to leave their ships in protest at the decision by the carrier, which is owned by DP World, while there are reports that the operator has lined up agency staff to replace them.
Unions RMT and Nautilus have instructed their members to remain onboard vessels and are demanding immediate intervention from the UK government to stop the outsourcing of jobs.
