Cargo volume has dropped by 7% at the Port of Oakland in the first four months of the year, a consequence principally of China’s COVID crackdown and its ripple effect on ocean carrier scheduling.
Containerised import loads through Oakland fell 17% while exports sagged 18, with the port attributing the decline to factory and port shutdowns in China, Oakland’s largest trade partner.
The port noted that disruption at Shanghai, the world’s busiest port, is delaying US-bound import shipments and that wreaks havoc on ocean carrier scheduling.
